About

After four decades as a top-tier advertising and graphic design professional, Dick Mitchell has transitioned to painting in earnest.

Dick is a rancher and horseman. Most of his work is created from a passion for the international equine sport of Reining. Though Reining is a Western sport like Cutting, Dick’s canvases are more contemporary than traditional cowboy narratives. As many enthusiasts have noted, his canvases capture the expression of a competitive horse. His Reining paintings are not portraits of individual horses or visual depictions of conformation. He chooses to paint the athletes exactly the way they are judged in the show pen -- performing the powerful, dynamic athletic maneuvers of sliding stops and spins correctly on a loose rein. As a former competitor and APHA Reserve World Champion, Dick believes that emotion coupled with motion is more important than the true identity of the rider or horse.
